Peter Warren is the Chairman of the Cyber Security Research Institute, an independent think tank dedicated to raising awareness of cyber security issues among the public at large, and a freelance journalist specialising in technology, undercover investigations and science issues. A noted investigative journalist, Peter has worked on numerous investigations for the UK’s prestigious Sunday Times Insight team and for the Sunday Times Magazine.

The former technology editor of Scotland on Sunday and the Sunday Express and an associate producer for BBC2, he has worked across a variety of media, including the Guardian, The Independent, the Daily Mirror, Evening Standard, the Sunday Times, the Sunday Express, Sunday Business, Channel 4, Sky News, the BBC and specialist magazines.

In 1996 Peter was runner-up in the UK Press Gazette Business Awards for Technology Scoop of the Year. A guest speaker on Technology Ethics to the European Union’s Information Society Technologies conference in Helsinki, Peter, who lives in Suffolk, is an acknowledged expert on computer security issues.

In 2005 Peter collaborated with Michael Streeter to write the critically acclaimed book ‘Cyber Alert’ which drew on material from first hand sources in the intelligence and hacking communities and unprecedented access to the UK National High Tech Crime Unit and the FBI. The book, written as a warning of the risks posed to the world by cyber attackers is acknowledged as accurately portraying the issues that we now face.

In 2006, Peter won the BT IT Security News story of the year prize for his work exposing the practice of discarding computer hard drives containing sensitive business and personal data.

In 2007, Peter won the IT Security News story of the year prize again for work done with Future Intelligence showing that Chinese hackers had broken into the UK Houses of Parliament.

In 2008 Peter won the BT Enigma Award for services to technology security journalism.
